Where will you go when you die?

Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

When I was born again in 1988 one of the first things I told my husband was that you can “know” that you are going to heaven when you die. He didn’t say anything right at that moment, but he later told me he was thinking “how can anyone know they’re going to heaven when they die.”  I knew because the Bible told me I could know …

1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

1 John 5:20 And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.

He came to the Lord several months after I did, and then he knew what I meant.

I know that the meaning of the term born again is often terribly misrepresented. This is true in the United States and it’s probably true elsewhere. But a counterfeit doesn’t negate the existence of the genuine. That’s true with many things in this world, and it’s also true concerning the new birth.

To be born again means to be born of God’s Holy Spirit. It means that a person is indwelt by the Holy Spirit. How does that happen? When a person truly repents and believes the gospel they will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Salvation is a gift, and it is received by faith. The Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ, is received by faith. The bible tells us …

Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

God is not a respecter of persons, and he does not favor one person above another. He offers salvation and the gift of the Holy Spirit to everyone. This is so important because without the Holy Spirit, if a person is not born of the Spirit, they will not go to heaven when they die.

How can a person know if they have the Holy Spirit?

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

1. Jesus Christ is God.

John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

2. The bible is the inerrant Word of God, meaning that the bible is divinely inspired and is without error.

2 Peter 1:19-21 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Isaiah 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

3. Jesus Christ is the Savior of the whole world and the only way to heaven.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

4. Salvation is a gift and cannot be earned.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

5. Every human being was born in sin.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

6. Heaven is only attainable because Christ shed his blood and died on the cross as a substitute for sinners.

Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

7. There is a heaven.

Revelation 21:1-5 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

8. That there is a hell.

Luke 16:19-31 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

9. If you want to go to heaven you must be born again, born of God’s Spirit. (This is not water baptism.)

John 3:1-9 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

I used to think that I received the Holy Spirit when I was confirmed as a young child. Not true. When the Holy Spirit comes a person is transformed. They become a new creation in Christ Jesus. That’s what happened to me at the age of 38.

We are living in a time when false teaching is extensive. The antidote to deception is to know the bible for yourself. Read the New Testament first and then read the entire bible, and then read it again. Read it often, and ask the Lord for understanding. I suspect many people read passages here and there but have never read even the entire New Testament from beginning to end. If you haven’t I pray you would start today. Then you will know where you are going when you die.

Nicodemus asked questions. Nicodemus sought the Lord. Nicodemus repented and became a believer. I encourage you to do the same.

Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Old Age. To be old and sick are the evil days. They are days without pleasure.

Ecclesiastes 12:1 Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

We have done volunteer work in nursing homes for many years and I think it is a blessed ministry. It is a privilege to bring comfort and share the gospel with those who are at the end of their days here on earth, and I do not believe our labor is in vain. For some, it may be the first time that they’ve heard the gospel message. God has not forgotten them. Others, already believers, love having a service to attend right there on the premises. These believers, though elderly and ill, still shine. The joy on their faces is a testimony to God’s faithfulness.

The persistent unbeliever, at the end of his or her life, is truly a painful sight to behold. The evil days have come and they remain without hope. May the Lord have mercy upon their souls and “. . . give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth.” 2 Timothy 2:25

Last Sunday at the nursing home my husband preached from the third chapter of the book of Daniel. He spoke about the king who made a golden image. All the people were told that when they heard the sound of music, they were to fall down and worship the golden image. Those that refused would be cast into the midst of a burning fiery furnace. Two choices, worship an idol or be thrown into a fiery furnace! Three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, refused to obey the king. They said our God can deliver us “But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” The king threw them into the furnace for their refusal to obey him, but God intervened and the three men were unharmed.

Dare to be a Daniel,
Dare to stand alone!
Dare to have a purpose firm!
Dare to make it known.
