GODLY PARENTS AND UNGODLY CHILDREN

I’ve been reading 1 Samuel and it just struck me that Hannah was such a godly woman, and her son Samuel was a prophet and judge, yet Samuel’s sons, Joel and Abiah, were corrupt. Godly parents yet ungodly offspring!

Hannah prays to the Lord asking for a son…

1 Samuel 1:10-11 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore. And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no rasor come upon his head.

The Lord answers Hannah’s prayer and Hannah gives Samuel to the LORD…

1 Samuel 1:27-28 For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.

Hannah’s son Samuel is a prophet and judge…

1 Samuel 3:20 And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.

1 Samuel 7:15-17 And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places. And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.

But Samuel’s sons walked not in his ways…

1 Samuel 8:1-3 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba. And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

Godly parents, and grandparents, yet ungodly children. It’s amazing to contemplate such a thing, yet we find it often in Scripture, and in our own lives.

Arron’s sons Nadab and Abihu…

Numbers 26:61 And Nadab and Abihu died when they offered profane fire before the LORD.

And Eli’s sons…

1 Samuel 2:12 Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.

And King David’s son Absalom…

2 Samuel 15:13-14 And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.

Matthew 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
