PROMISE

It was a Sunday in November 1990, in New York City. My husband and I were handing out Bible tracts in Port Authority Bus Terminal. In those days we attended church services at 10am and 7pm and evangelized in between.

It was late in the day when my husband had an extremely uneasy feeling that came upon him suddenly. He became aware of a group of men lingering by the men’s room looking our way. He picked up his bag of tracts and said it was time for us to be heading back to church. He sensed evil and that we may even be in danger.

At the exact moment that we were about to leave my husband heard a man call out the word… “promise”. The man was standing at a distance. A casually dressed man, a man with a peaceful countenance, who seemed to come out of nowhere. He didn’t approach us, but staying where he was he stretched out his arm, keeping it perfectly straight, and pointed back and forth to each of us saying… “promise, you two, promise, Revelation 3: 8 and 10.” He said those words twice.

My husband, nodding his head, smiled at the man and said “thank you my friend” and began to walk away. The man stood there, not moving at all, simply staring straight ahead with his hands down in front of him now, and quietly said… “read it”. My husband said “ok, I’ll read that” and put his bag down and opened his Bible and began to read the verses out loud. But he could only read the first verse, because he began to weep, sensing a strong presence of the Lord.

We made it safely back to church that night, grateful for the Lord’s protection. Though it happened long ago, that incident is something we will never forget.

Before we left Port Authority that night, and the man who spoke to us, my husband asked him “by the way, what’s your name?” The man answered… “Angel”.

Rev 3:8  I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

Rev 3:10  Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

  2. It’s all looking rather grim ahead.
And I am amazed that most people are still talking about if they will be able to go on their planned holidays, and back to the pubs and sports etc.
    Ezekiel 9:4 struck me recently.
“The Lord said, … “Put a mark on the foreheads of those who sigh and cry over all the abominations that are done within the city.”
God will protect His precious lambs and sheep, in His way and His time.

  3. Hi Cathy,
Thank you for sharing this precious memory of yours. It has both blessed me & moved me upon reading it. Such a wonderful promise of Holy protection for those on the narrow path who may have but “a little strength”.
I am praying that the Lord would strengthen his people to keep His word and not deny His name; as wickedness abounds, like a roaring lion, seeking whom it may devour. I pray for our faith to increase and the fears to decrease. I am hoping the Lord will include me in that promise also. As you know, I wrote the same scripture on my latest blog post – due to how very precious the words are to me.
Who knows how long we have left? Only our Father in heaven knows the hour. But we can certainly see the buds on the trees and know that the time is short.
May the Lord bless you and your dear husband,
    Your sister in Christ,
    Helen x

    • Thank you for reading about our experience all those years ago. I join my prayers with yours Helen. We too here sense time is short. And yes, that promise is for you too. Blessings to you and yours…

    • I should add that the following two phrases from those Scriptures stand out in my mind…

“for thou hast a little strength”

“I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world”

And we wonder is now that time.

      • I think so. At least within 10 years, if not sooner. Think UN Agendas!
I am weeping and praying with a heavy heart right now. This morning I read Acts 1-10 and noticed Saul going from house to house dragging people off to prison for following The Way.
A guy called Mike in the WHO said they will need to go take people from their homes whom they suspect as having “the virus”. And I watched another USA guy saying the same thing. That is what is in their hearts. Their agenda. They have said it openly.
May God have mercy on us all.

Helen I was aware of that also and I found it to be very troubling. You mentioned in your post that in the U.K. they will now require one physician rather than two to declare someone incompetent I think it was. And then there’s the question will vaccines be mandatory. The Lord will give His people strength. We have begun nightly to pray for strength for whatever we may face in the future. The older I get the more I realize that it’s only in the Lord’s strength will we be able to go through what lies ahead, whether it be troubling times or ill health. And yes, “May God have mercy on us all.”
